Prof Chukwuemeka Ike dies at 89

Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, one of Nigeria’s
finest novelists and traditional ruler of  Ndikelionu Community in Orumba, Anambra State,
is dead.

Born on 28th April, 1931, Prof. Ike, aged
89 years, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2020, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe
University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, after a brief illness.

He was remarkable for a unique brand of
fiction that mixes lampoon, humour and satire. His hometown, Ndikelionwu, was a
regular feature in his writings.

Prof. Ike was also a former Registrar of the
West Africa Examination Council and Nigerian Book Trust Foundation boss.  His works have been studied nationally and
internationally for school certificate examinations.

To his credit are the fictional works;
Toads for Super (1965), The Naked God’s (1970), The Potter’s Wheel (1973),
Sunset at Dawn (1976),  Expo ’77 (1980),
The Chicken Chasers (1980), The Bottled Leopard (1985), Our Children Are Coming
Home (1990), and Conspiracy of Silence.

He was educated at Government College,
Umuahia, and attended the University of Ibadan for his college education.
A family source disclosed that his burial
arrangement would be announced soon.
