Ship Owners digest: How Fuel Right does ships right

L-R: Marine Engineer, Kuzi Onyibe of Phoenix Register of Shipping (Lagos Office)
and Tim Rivard, President, Fuel Right (Canada) Ltd.

Tim
Rivard, President of Fuel Right (Canada) Limited, shared information with ship owners
on how to ensure having clean fuel with improved fuel economy by using Fuel
Right in their ship tanks.

The Fuel Right Story

Fuel Right was developed over 20 years ago. The initial focus was to develop a more
effective and less hazardous technology than biocides for eliminating bacterial
contamination in distillate fuels.
Biocides are pesticides that are slowly
being pushed out of the market due to their inherent handling hazards as well as
their inability to kill bacteria found in sludge (also known as biofilms).
Another factor is that bacteria become resistant to biocides over time.

Fuel Right technology does not kill bacteria. Instead, bacteria are
unable to form biofilms in fuel tanks, fuel lines, filters, pumps, etc.
Bacteria are therefore harmless and pass through the fuel delivery system and
are combusted.

Fast-forward to about seven years ago; Tim and his team began exploring the
marine market to determine what benefits Fuel Right would offer on marine
vessels. Working with several large oil and shipping firms, Tim quickly
determined that Fuel Right benefits for marine vessels extend far beyond just
eliminating sludge.

The most important finding was that Fuel Right cleans all marine fuels
from ULSD to IFO 180/380 to a degree that far exceeds ISO standards. This clean
fuel results in a very clean fuel delivery system (from tank to injectors, to
include purifiers, filters and injectors), significant improvement in fuel
economy and reduced emissions. Moreover, using Fuel Right resulted in
elimination of hard carbon deposits in the engine cylinders as well as
elimination of corrosion.

In vessels that have used Fuel Right for longer periods (> 3 years), it
has been shown that Fuel Right greatly reduces carbon deposits in the engines;
this leads to large savings for vessel operators because carbon deposits are
directly related to cylinder wear and lubricating oil life and injector life.

The benefits that Fuel Right offers are a positive contribution to the new IMO
standards that will be in effect starting 2020.
Fuel Right testing at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) determined that
Fuel Right reduced hydrocarbon emission by 60 percent, particulates by 40 percent
as well as significant reductions in sulfur and nitrous oxides.
These reductions
are important; as ITU Professor Ergin noted, 17 large freighter ships emit the
same emissions as 330 million cars. So, if Fuel Right can reduce the emissions
on just 17 ships, never mind the thousands of ships that are out there, it can
play a significant role in improving our quality worldwide by helping
shipowners reduce emissions with our technology.

Helping Ship Owners achieve Fuel Economy

Fuel Right ship trials have verified a significant improvement in fuel
economy; fuel economy is really a measure of how efficient an engine is
running, not changing an engine’s ability to burn less fuel. It is a question
of how efficiently the engine burns that fuel.

When Fuel Right improves the
combustion in a cylinder, that means better fuel efficiency, which means lower
fuel use. All data show efficiency improvements anywhere from 5 to 12 per cent
when using Fuel Right. It depends on the type of fuel burned as well as on the
pre- existing engine condition.

The company is working with a large Chinese company; analysis of trial
data from two 76,000 DWT vessels shows that the fleet of 60 ships will save
this company $6.8 million annually. If extended to fleet owners who operate 1000
ships, that would be like 10 to 100 folds in bottom-line savings.

 It is a
tremendous financial opportunity and impact for these companies; they will be
more competitive due to improved financial efficiency.
Fuel Right has also
shown that the service life expectancy of engine components is extended. Fuel
Right has customers who have used Fuel Right for number of years without any
injector service at all.

Testimonials from Fuel Right Users

Fuel Right started its operations in Canada with Irving Oil. Irving runs
a fleet of tug boats that service the LNG vessels that operate in Eastern
Canada; these vessels had contamination problems because fuel would remain in the
fuel tanks for extended periods of time (perfect environment for bacterial
contamination to occur).

Fuel Right solved the problem for both tugs and offshore service
vessels. These vessels run upwards of 800,000 litres of fuel on board or 800
tons of fuel. Fuel Right has treated these vessels for over five
years.

Exxon Mobil Canada likewise had contamination issues on their offshore
rigs, leading to diesel generator shutdowns; Fuel Right solved these oil rig
issues and is now specified by Exxon Mobil, replacing the biocides previously
used.

In Turkey, Fuel Right is used by IDO Marine in all 35 ferries; these
ferries use over 50 million liters of fuel per year. Fuel contamination has
been eliminated, fuel economy has improved by 5 percent, filter life extended
and tank inspections show extremely clean tanks.

In Greece, Fuel Right is the premier premium diesel program in the
country. Fuel Right has also been used in all the tanker vessels operated by
ElinOil. The results are extraordinary. The fuel delivery system is
exceptionally clean, fuel economy has improved by 12 percent and the engines in
one vessel show no added wear after 8400 hours of operation.

In China, Fuel Right is a certified vendor to Shenhua Energy, the
largest coal company in the world, with 60 bulk carriers; Fuel Right is now
used full time on eight ships with the objective of treating all 60 ships in three
years.

For Nigeria, Fuel Right has now established a partnership with HPEK, and is
optimistic about the future since Nigeria is a very large market, with important
ports and a globally important oil and gas sector.

Fuel Right’s objective is to provide Nigeria with the proven operational
and economic benefits that its ‘disruptive’ technology now provides in over 30
countries.
