2014 US ferry passenger census released

More than 115 million passengers were
carried on ferries in the United States and its territories in 2014, according
to the US Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics
(BTS).

The figures were released in the Bureau’s Highlights
Of The 2014 National Census Of Ferry Operators
 (NCFO).
According to the census, the passengers
were transported by 128 ferry operators across the nation using a fleet of
almost 500 active vessels.
Services were provided through 441
terminals on 741 unique route segments in 38 states and one US territory.
The NCFO is a biennial census of known
ferry operations within the US and its territories.

The BTS describes ferry operations within
the scope of the NCFO as those providing itinerant, fixed route, and common
carrier passenger and/or vehicle ferry service.

Railroad car float operations
are also included within the scope of the NCFO.
