Five Star Logistics  Ltd., one of the terminal operators, on Wednesday gave N5 million each to

The terminal operator paid a cheque N5 million to the family of late Samson Onyonya, while the stevedoring company gave the family a cheque of N800,000.

Making presentations to each next- of- kin of the deceased dockworkers, a representative of the company’s management, Chief Clement Imoh, commiserated with the families and encouraged them to bear the irreparable loss.

He thanked the President of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria(MWUN) Mr Adewale Adeyanju for his presence at the presentation and supporting the families even at the death of their loved ones.
He also appreciated the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Administration(NIMASA)
for following through with the compensation process and ensuring proper documentation.
Imoh expressed gratitude to the families for their understanding and patience.
Responding, the President of the MWUN thanked the management of the terminal for compensating the families of the deceased workers.
He, however, charged the company on the need to take safety more seriously in order to check such incidents at the terminal.
He appealed to the families to ensure proper administration of the money to avoid wastage and ending up not having funds to cater for important needs.
He said “I appeal to the families that as you collect the money, use the money to take care of the family and I am sure God will protect you as you do the right thing.”

It would be recalled that the death of the dockworkers occurred on Sept. 19 and Sept. 30 respectively.
