Lawyer wants maritime plan reviewed to meet present demands

The Secretary of the African Shipowners Association, Ms. Funmi Folorunsho, has called for a
review of the plan driving the maritime industry, to attain set goals for economic advancement.
Folorunsho , a maritime lawyer, however, said she was not sure if there was an extant maritime plan.
“If we have a plan, I am not aware of it. However, even if we had a plan, plans are meant to be reviewed periodically.
“That is the way to ensure that they meet with the challenges and realities of the times.
“We must at this point be able to say to ourselves, how far, how much more should be done to get whatever plan we may have had, dating back to a particular period,’’ she said.
Folorunsho urged the minister of transport to do a discreet review according to maritime services.
She said that such exercise should be the responsibility of professionals who could give the most practicable advice based on the industry’s peculiar needs.
According to her, the maritime industry in the country has huge potential to create jobs for thousands of people if the priorities were well aligned.
Folorunsho emphasised the need to give attention to manpower development because, according to her, it is the base on which other building blocks would be laid.
