MWUN condemns burning of NPA building

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has condemned the setting ablaze of the head office of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Marina, Lagos, by hoodlums taking advantage of the endSARS protests.

Leadership of the Union led by its President General, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, expressed the condemnation on Monday when it visited the burnt building to assess the extent of damage done by the hoodlums when they set the building ablaze on 22nd October, 2020.

The Union described the damage done to the building and other valuables as shocking, saying peaceful protests were only meant to draw government’s attention to issues and never meant for looting and destruction of lives and property.

“Whilst peaceful protest is universally acknowledged as a legitimate instrument usually engaged to draw the attention of government to its inadequacies/mis-governance, when this protest turns awry and weapons are wantonly used, it becomes regrettable and counterproductive.

“The wreckage visited on the NPA Headquarters building, and the looting of its property is protest carried too far. And it is only vandals whose brains are no longer in the right position that can carry out such,” the Union said.

Expressing solidarity with the NPA, the Union prayed that the perpetrators of the act be apprehended and brought to justice.
