Nigerian Ports Authority clears refuse dumps in Apapa

The Management of the Lagos Port Complex led by Mrs Olufumilayo Olotu has in a clean-up exercise rid the Wharf Road, Apapa of the several refuse dumps that littered the major road for months.

It was gathered that the Management of Lagos Ports Complex acted on the directive of the Managing Director- Nigerian Ports Authority, Ms Hadiza Bala Usman, to engage in the clean-up exercise as a CSR initiative for the Apapa Community.

It was also gathered that in an effort to ensure that the side access road to the port is always free, the Port Management had inspected the area and engaged commercial motor cyclists who pointed out the menace caused by abandoned heaps of refuse littered along the road.

Efforts by the Estate Department of the Port to engage Apapa Local Government Council for the clean-up had also met brick walls.

It was alleged that Apapa Local Government whose duty it is to clean up streets and roads within its vicinity had in recent times turned a blind eye to all roads leading to the port, also its surroundings, a situation which sources say has heightened tension between both organisations.

Some business owners around the vicinity applauded the NPA’s initiative and prayed that the Local Government would subsequently live up to its duty to avoid sights of embarrassing refuse dumps which residents fear could trigger an epidemic.
