NPA mulls strategy for full utilisation of Ikorodu lighter terminal

Developing
a framework for effective utilisation of Ikorodu Lighter Terminal is essential,
Mallam Habib Abdullahi, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA)
observed on Wednesday at the Ikorodu terminal.


Abdullahi
, who was on a joint inspection of the terminal with the Comptroller-General of
the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hammed Alli (Rtd) said a tripartite committee
would be needed to carry out the assignment.

He
suggested that the committee to comprise of the Nigeria Nigerian Ports
Authority, Nigeria Customs Service, and the Federal Ministry of Transport, should
be mandated to interface with other stakeholders to work out modalities for the
optimal utilisation of the terminal.

Also,
 the Customs Boss, Col. Alli emphasized
the need for a meeting, preferably a technical committee that would come with
proposals or modalities on putting the terminal to optimal use.
He
said both Nigeria Customs Service and Nigerian Ports Authority were partners in
progress and that the two agencies should work together for the mutual benefit
of the country.

Alli
directed that the NCS, the Zone ‘A’ Command should look into having the two
large warehouses in Ikorodu, described as the largest in Nigeria, could be well
utilised.

On
accessibility to the terminal, in addition to roads, both the Comptroller
General, and the Managing Director of NPA emphasized the need for the opening
of the water ways through dredging so that importers and exporters can
patronize the terminal.

The
Comptroller General visited Ikorodu Terminal as part of his tour of Zone A of
the Command in Nigeria which comprises Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti
states.

The
Managing Director was accompanied on the tour by the General Manager Western
Ports of NPA, Chief Michael Ajayi and General Manager, Public Affairs, Capt.  Iheanacho Ebubeogu.
