In a statement, the Coordinator of the annual competition, Mrs Eucharia Udoka, said for the 2015 edition, participants are expected to write on the theme: ‘How to boost indigenous participation in the shipping sector.’

She said the competition is open to every member of the public irrespective of age, sex, vocation or residence.

She said the Annual Ships & Ports National Essay Competition, which started in 2006, was set up to encourage everyday people to spare some thoughts for the shipping sector and make intellectual contribution to the sector’s growth and development.

"It also aims to enable Nigerians appreciate the potentials of the nation's maritime sector and ruminate over its significance and importance to their means of livelihood and wellbeing,” she said.

Udoka said entries for this year’s competition opened on Monday November 23 and would close on Friday December 11 while prizes would be presented to winners on Thursday December 17, 2015 in Lagos.

“A total cash prize of N250, 000 cash will be given out to winners as we have consistently done over the past eight years.

“The best essay writer will smile home with N100, 000 while the rest will go to other winners as will be announced during the prize presentation ceremony,” she said.
