The Shippers Association, Lagos State, on Monday said it was wrong for Lagos State Government to force the ports to function only at night by restricting truck movement to night time.
President of the association, Rev. Jonathan Nicol, stated this in an interview in Lagos.
He said the action, which led to an industrial action by the truck owners had taken a toll on the shippers businesses.
He, therefore, called on the Lagos State Government to ensure everything possible was done to end the strike.
He said government should be mindful of the resultant effect and consider deliberations before such decisions.
“Government no doubt has the responsibility of protecting lives and property of the citizens in every area, but government should have dialogue with the truck owners before the action.
“It is only at such forum that all interests will be considered, and for the overall good of the people,” he said.
Nicol said government; Federal and state, should immediately address the truck owners complaints that the roads be repaired.
He said government should also consider the issue of security raised by the truck owners, who were concerned about their safety at night.
“Government should rescind the decision for now, and work out the way to get it right while discussions go on.
“The shippers cannot do the work of the transporters and the chain is only complete when the cargo is delivered,” Nicol said.
NAN reports that the Lagos State Government had order that trucks be restricted ted to move at night only after a container- laden truck fell off from the Ojuelegba bridge, killing three persons 11 days ago.
