Association wants more government agencies at borders to curtail smuggling

Alhaji Olayiwola Shittu, National
President, Association of Customs Licensed Agents(ANLCA), says more government
agencies should be transferred to the border areas to curtail smuggling.

Shittu made the call in an interview
with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

The ANALCA chieftain noted that the
need for more hands at the borders was necessary because of the rising
incidence of smuggling.

“We have very porous borders. We have
even advised that rather than pack all these government agencies at the ports,
let them be taken to the land borders.

“You will discover that if those
people are to man our borders officially, there will be less smuggling,” Shittu
said.

He added that even in countries where
advanced technology had been adapted to combat such nefarious activities, the
act could only be curtailed but not completely eradicated.

“In anywhere in the world, smuggling
can never be eradicated. Even in America, Britain, with all their fantastic
ability to combat smuggling, it is not possible.

“So, when the government now puts
stiff conditions, you also know that Nigerians are very pro-active, whatever
they want, they have a way of bringing it in,” he said.
